Next Saturday, being 19 March 2005, the third 'Magic Casements' speculative fiction festival is running at the NSW Writers Centre. Location, times, etc. all at: http://www.nswwriterscentre.org.au
I make special note of this because this year, I am on a panel. Yes, at 11.30 am in the Double Room, I will be holding forth (along with luminaries Ian Irvine, Michael Kennedy and Ted Scribner) upon that most vital of topics: Hobbits vs Harry Potter.
There will probably be some digressions into cultural influences, literary descendents and the difference if any between children's and adult fantasy, but I'm anticipating outrageous partisanship and below-the-belt criticism. I am intending to cover the vital topic of fan activity and have been researching this heavily. Frankly, I don't know which scares me more: the Harry Potter recipes or the Denethor slash.
Anyway. It's all day, all free except Terry Dowling's lecture, and with any luck, I'll see you there.
