Conjure '06
David and I have been home for about two hours now. So while the memory is still fresh...
Life Lessons Learned:
An ID tag is a purely symbolic object. Thus, if worn with confidence, a scrawl on a piece of paper will suffice for the entire weekend.
Never make green tea with Brisbane tap water.
The Talking Squid is a website.
All the stuff from my B.A. Communications is still cool. Except memes.
Self-promotion can be quite fun.
Best Quotes:
"Two seconds is an eternity with a katana." - Simon Higgins
"Oh my God, the genre's got my baby!" - Kim Wilkins, and(when asked the difference between horror and dark fantasy) "Fifty percent more velvet." (She acknowledged she was quoting someone else, but I didn't catch the name.)
"Rats' hearts on a chip...which is not a food." - Chris Lawson
"And that's how Conjure is going to save the world." - Kyla Ward
And the following dialogue during "The Year of the Plague" panel:
Damon Cavalchini - "Do you all want to introduce yourselves? Because every time I ask panelists for a bio it keeps changing."
David Carroll - "That's what we call a biohazard, folks."
Generally Memorable:
The layout of the Mercure and Ibis hotels. Even after four days it still didn't make sense.
Haiku Man. Actually, the entire Conjure film.
Utility Kilts
Castles, Swords and Killing Your Horse. (hilariously good panel)
Neologisms and Archeologisms
Simon Higgins demonstrating Japanese sword techniques on his wife.
Genuine bellydancers at the Masquerade.
Dino on the Magic Carpet. Also at the Masquerade.
The way the dance floor filled at the first bars of "A Neverending Story"
Jason Nahrung, Arabian pirate.
Sean William's Storm Trooper body guard.
The 'Troy' launch (Being Simon Brown...)
His Head Exploded Like A Tomato. (another fun panel)
Ducking out to Borders to buy books we couldn't get in the Huckster's Room.
Buying no less than 9 new books all up. And one roleplaying game.
The Salad Bar at the Ibis at 8.30pm on any night.
Discussing the New Weird at 9.00 am Monday morning.
Conventions. Gotta love 'em!
